Summer meeting

Shenington

The annual Summer meeting at Shenington Gliding club, an informal and relaxed feast of gliding, flying, food and fellowship.

Edgehill (Shenington) was the site of the first battle of the Civil War in 1642 (declared a draw) From it's airfield much of the development flying of the Gloster Meteor took place. It is now a gliding site (Shenington Gliding Club). There is no fixed programme but in addition to meeting and making friends there will be (D.V.W.P.) a Thai meal on Friday evening, gliding on Saturday and Sunday, and a barbecue on Saturday evening. Regrettably there is no longer a catering bus so bring your own food and drink. (There is a good village shop in Tysoe and supermarkets in Banbury) There are cooking facilities in the clubhouse. There is much in the area to see and do. Bring your family. The only costs are shown below.

The airfield is listed in the usual publications. It is privately owned and a glider base with cables up to 2,000ft. The runways, which used to be shared with cows – alas no longer, are not maintained and there is no fuel. Gliders take precedence and circuit both left and right. Take offs and landings may not be on the same runway. I shall have a hand held radio and am prepared, if available, to profer information on 129.9 a common gliding and parachuting frequency also used between winches and launch points. If in doubt stay well above 2,000ft and watch. Microlights are not welcome (planning conditions). Do not overfly the village of Shenington (or any other village of course). There is a landing fee of £5 for powered aircraft, waived if you take a flight in a glider.

Gliderswith instructors will be available all day on Saturday and Sunday. Please also feel free to bring your own. Club gliders: £30 for a trial flight and 3 months membership, thereafter £7 per winch launch plus 25p per minute (instruction free). Own glider: £6 per day plus £7 per winch launch. Club or own, glider £25.00 for aero-tow to 2000 ft.

Friday evening. Some members meet at a Thai restaurant in Banbury. Anyone wishing to join us please let Andrew Clymo know by the Thursday evening (ph 01384 873693 mob 07762 383536 email andrew@clymo.co.uk).

Barbecue Saturday evening. A selection of viands or comestibles will be available for you to buy (super value), otherwise bring your own. First come first served.

Accommodation and meals. Make your own arrangements. Our hosts have a club room with cooking facilities and of course a bar. There is ample space for tents and caravans and a recently refurbished bunkhouse - a £5 per night donation would be appreciated for either.

Children. No special arrangements have been made. Our personal experience is that there is so much space and so much going on that boredom is not a problem. They should, along with dogs be kept under control. They are your responsibility.
