Spring meeting

Diary of Events > Spring meeting

London

Our February programme, largely put together by Dr Claire McCready, is worthy of an international audience. She has assembled an exciting team of speakers who have agreed to give up their leisure time at a weekend. They will undoubtedly provide us with a stimulating mixture of education and entertainment, which I know you will enjoy.

The programme looks at teamwork in the aviation environment.

Dr Wilkinson, BA Health Services, will speak about airline crew selection for both physical and mental characteristics - the latter, such as psychological suitability is often hard to define and assess.

Sqn. Ldr. Art Stacey AFC although retired from the RAF, continues aviating and is coming out of speaking retirement to share his Nimrod ditching experience. He will comment on whether knowing the theory of CRM and HF helped.

Prof Mike Bagshaw will discuss aircrew Human Factors training, particularly in the GA setting.

Sqn Ldr Carapiett, 2IC of Tactical Medical Wing RAF Lyneham, will speak on the development of the MERT whose skills are often highlighted in the media for carrying out rescues in the most challenging situations.

Sqn Ldr Gus Cabre is Chief Instructor at the Centre for Aviation Medicine, is passionate about GA and has put together an "accident investigation" into the first described aviation fatality involving Icarus.

HEMS are very well known for working over London. It will be interesting to "compare and contrast" their role with that of the MERT.

Finally, one of the best known examples of teamwork in aviation is the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team. Two of their pilots will talk to us about the physical and mental demands of professional display flying. Their lecture room presentations are as good as their aeronautical ones and there will be equally impressive video footage!
